Project Overview
This project is a crocheted baby blanket, perfect for keeping a little one cozy. The main body is worked in a solid color with a textured stitch, creating a soft and inviting surface. The border adds a playful contrast with a two-tone shell stitch pattern, finished with a delicate scalloped edge. It’s a wonderful piece for nurseries, strollers, or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Skill Level
Beginner to Intermediate. This pattern uses basic crochet stitches and introduces the shell stitch for the border, making it accessible for those new to crochet while still being engaging for more experienced crafters.
Approximate Finished Size
Approximately 30 inches x 35 inches (76 cm x 89 cm). This size is ideal for a crib, stroller, or tummy time blanket. You can easily adjust the size by altering the starting chain and the number of rows for the main body.
Materials
- Cotton Yarn, Worsted Weight (Category 4) – approximately 1200 yards total
- Light Blue (Color A): approximately 800 yards
- White (Color B): approximately 200 yards
- Dark Grey (Color C): approximately 200 yards
- Crochet Hook: H/5.00 mm
- Yarn Needle (for weaving in ends)
- Scissors
Yarn
I recommend using 100% cotton yarn for baby blankets. Cotton is soft, breathable, and easy to care for, which is essential for baby items. It also holds its shape well and comes in a beautiful range of colors. Worsted weight is a good choice as it works up quickly and creates a cozy, substantial fabric without being too heavy.
Crochet Hook
An H/5.00 mm hook is a versatile size for worsted weight yarn and will give you a lovely drape for this blanket. Always check your gauge, however, to ensure your blanket comes out to the desired size and texture.
Abbreviations (US Terms)

Before You Begin / Pattern Notes
- This blanket is worked flat, in rows, for the main body.
- The border is then added around the perimeter of the blanket.
- Starting chain does not count as a stitch unless otherwise specified.
- For color changes, work the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color.
- Gauge for main body: 14 hdc and 10 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). While gauge isn’t critical for a blanket, matching it will help you achieve the approximate finished size.
Complete Crochet Pattern: Sweet Dreams Baby Blanket
Main Body (Light Blue – Color A)
The main body uses a simple textured stitch that gives it a lovely, subtle pattern.
With Color A (Light Blue), ch 101 (or any odd number for desired width, adding 2 more chains if using a different stitch count for the border foundation later).
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. (99 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as st), turn. Hdc in first st. *Sk next st, hdc in next st. Repeat from * across until 2 sts remain. Sk next st, hdc in last st. (99 hdc, including ch 2 space equivalent)
Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count as st), turn. Hdc in first st. *Hdc in skipped st from previous row (working in front of the hdc just made), hdc in next hdc. Repeat from * across, making sure to hdc in the skipped stitch from the previous row before the last hdc of the row. Hdc in the top of the turning chain. (99 hdc)
Repeat Row 3 until the main body measures approximately 34 inches (or desired length), ending on a Row 3 repeat. This will create a textured, basketweave-like effect.
FO Color A, leaving a long tail for weaving in.
Border Foundation Round
Now we’ll work a round of single crochet around the entire blanket to create a neat edge for the border.
Attach Color A (Light Blue) with a sl st to any corner of the blanket.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire blanket. Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner st. Along the sides of the blanket, aim for approximately 2 sc per hdc row. Along the top and bottom edges, work 1 sc into each hdc st. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (Stitch count should be even along opposite sides and top/bottom, ensuring corners are defined).
FO Color A.
Two-Tone Shell Stitch Border
This border will be worked in alternating colors (White and Dark Grey) to create a lovely striped shell effect, with a final light blue scallop.
Border – Color B (White)
Attach Color B (White) with a sl st to any sc st on one of the longer sides of the blanket (not directly in a corner). You will start working along a long side.
Rnd 2 (Color B): Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sk 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st (this forms a shell). Sk 2 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * around the blanket. When you reach a corner, ensure your last shell or sc before the corner falls nicely, and work a shell into the corner ch-1 space from the previous round (or into the corner sc if no ch-1 space was made). Adjust your skips slightly if needed to make the shells line up. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (Ensure you have an even number of shells and sc stitches around the blanket, making sure shells are in corners.)
FO Color B.
