Discover the Magic of the Star Stitch!

Hello, fellow yarn lovers! Isn’t it just wonderful how a simple hook and some colorful yarn can transform into something truly magical? Today, I’m so excited to share with you a delightful project that will introduce you to or refresh your skills with one of my absolute favorite textured stitches: the star stitch! Just look at those beautiful little starbursts of color – they are so charming and create such a cozy, rich fabric.

This pattern is for a lovely, multi-colored swatch, much like the one you see in the picture, featuring soft pink, calming lavender, refreshing teal, and a touch of creamy white. It’s the perfect way to practice this gorgeous stitch and create a small sample that can be used as a coaster, a decorative accent, or simply a beautiful reminder of your crafting journey. Whether you’re a beginner looking to expand your stitch repertoire or an experienced crocheter seeking a relaxing and satisfying project, this star stitch swatch is calling your name!

The star stitch creates a dense, warm fabric, making it ideal for everything from cozy blankets and throws to stylish scarves, cowls, and even textured bags. The color changes in this design highlight the stitch definition beautifully, adding an extra layer of visual interest. So, grab your hook and your favorite yarns, and let’s make something beautiful together!

Project Overview

This project focuses on creating a multi-colored crochet swatch using the beautiful star stitch. It’s designed to be a learning piece, allowing you to get comfortable with the stitch pattern, learn how to change colors seamlessly, and understand the texture it creates. Once mastered, you can apply this stitch to larger projects like blankets, scarves, or even garments. The swatch is worked in rows, with each color highlighting a distinct stripe of star stitches.

Skill Level

Easy to Intermediate. While the star stitch might look complex, it’s quite repetitive once you get the hang of it. If you’re comfortable with basic stitches like chain, single crochet, and half double crochet, you’ll do great!

Approximate Finished Size

Approximately 6 inches wide x 8 inches long (15 cm x 20 cm). This size can easily be adjusted by changing your starting chain and the number of rows.

Materials

Choosing the right materials is key to enjoying your crochet journey and achieving beautiful results. For this star stitch swatch, I recommend using a soft, worsted-weight yarn. The colors I’ve chosen are inspired by the beautiful palette in the photo, but feel free to pick your own favorites!

Yarn

  • Worsted Weight (Category 4) 100% Cotton or Acrylic Yarn
  • Color A: Cream (approx. 30 yards)
  • Color B: Pink (approx. 30 yards)
  • Color C: Lavender (approx. 30 yards)
  • Color D: Teal (approx. 30 yards)

Note: Cotton yarn will give you great stitch definition and a lovely drape, while acrylic is soft and easy to care for. Both work wonderfully for this stitch!

Crochet Hook

  • US H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook (or size needed to achieve desired gauge and stitch definition)

Other Notions

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • yo – yarn over
  • FO – fasten off

Before You Begin / Pattern Notes

  • The star stitch is worked in a two-row repeat. The first row creates the ‘stars’, and the second row is typically a half double crochet row.
  • The starting chain for the star stitch needs to be a multiple of 2, plus 1 (for the turning chain). For our swatch, we’ll use a multiple of 2 plus 2 for the foundation chain to accommodate the first star stitch.
  • Color changes happen at the end of every two rows (after each hdc row).
  • Always pull up your loops loosely when making the star stitch to ensure your fabric isn’t too tight.
  • The turning chain at the beginning of the hdc row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Gauge is not critical for a swatch, but consistent tension will give you the best results.

Crochet Star Stitch Swatch Pattern

Let’s get started on creating this gorgeous swatch! We’ll begin with Color A (Cream).

Foundation Chain (Color A)

Ch 22. (This will give you 10 star stitches across when completed).

Row 1 (Star Stitch Row – Color A)

  1. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
  2. Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  3. Insert hook into 4th ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  4. Insert hook into 5th ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).
  5. Insert hook into 6th ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
  6. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the star (this creates the ‘eye’ of the star). (This completes your first star stitch).
  7. To make the next star stitch: Insert hook into the ‘eye’ of the previous star, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
  8. Insert hook into the side of the last post of the previous star (the last loop you pulled up from the chain), yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  9. Skip the chain where the last loop of the previous star was made. Insert hook into the next unworked chain, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  10. Insert hook into the next unworked chain, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).
  11. Insert hook into the next unworked chain, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
  12. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the star.

Repeat steps 7-12 across the row until you have 10 star stitches. You will have 2 chains remaining. Work 1 hdc in the very last ch. (10 star stitches, 1 hdc).

Row 2 (HDC Row – Color A)

Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn. Work 1 hdc in the first st (which is the hdc from the previous row). Work 2 hdc in the ‘eye’ (ch-1 space) of each star stitch across the row. Work 1 hdc in the top of the last star stitch. (21 hdc). On the last hdc, change to Color B.

Row 3 (Star Stitch Row – Color B)

Ch 2, turn. (The ch 2 does not count as a st). This ch 2 helps elevate the first stitch. Now we will start the star stitch by inserting the hook into the 2nd ch from hook, just like we did for the foundation chain.

  1. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
  2. Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  3. Insert hook into the first hdc of the row (under both loops), yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  4. Insert hook into the next hdc, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).
  5. Insert hook into the next hdc, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
  6. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the star. (This completes your first star stitch over the hdc row).
  7. To make the next star stitch: Insert hook into the ‘eye’ of the previous star, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
  8. Insert hook into the side of the last post of the previous star, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  9. Skip the hdc where the last loop of the previous star was made. Insert hook into the next unworked hdc, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  10. Insert hook into the next unworked hdc, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).
  11. Insert hook into the next unworked hdc, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
  12. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the star.
